Washington, DC- In a May 26 news briefing White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan refused to answer a journalist's question on whether or not President Bush was against birth control. The reporter asked McClellan again today, but the White House spokesperson still refused to give a straight answer.
"It seems that Mr. McClellan has the easiest job in Washington right now. No matter what the question is, ‘no comment’ is the answer," said Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. "While we agree that in the interest of national security there are many things the president should keep confidential, his view on basic health care for women does not qualify under this definition. Is the president siding with activist pharmacists who deny women their birth-control prescriptions because they believe their personal views are more important than anyone else's? Or is President Bush siding with the 95 percent of American women who will use contraception in their lifetimes? Americans deserve to know where the president stands."
The White House has also refused to answer a letter from Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and 17 of her colleagues in which they ask the White House to give the President’s position on birth control.
