White House Acts Like There's Something To Hide In John Roberts' Record
Washington, DC – NARAL Pro-Choice America called the Bush administration’s refusal to allow the American public to review Supreme Court Nominee John Roberts’ documents when he served as a top political lawyer for the first Bush administration disdainful stonewalling.
"The White House continues to act like they think there is something to hide in John Roberts’ record. Coming on the heels of the White House’s backtracking on Roberts’ membership in the ultra-right wing Federalist Society, this arrogant refusal demonstrates that President George W. Bush intends to keep the American people in the dark about Roberts’ record as an architect of the first Bush administration’s anti-choice legal agenda," said Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America.
Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and other members of the Judiciary Committee had requested a limited number of documents related to specific cases during Roberts’ tenure in the Solicitor General’s office. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales informed Senator Leahy in a letter late Friday that the Justice Department refused to comply with the request.
