Washington, DC – NARAL Pro-Choice America President Nancy Keenan said a lawsuit from a far-right organization seeking to block Gov. Rod Blagojevich's emergency rule guaranteeing women access to doctor-prescribed birth control from taking effect would generate even more public support for the governor.
Earlier this month, in response to a Chicago pharmacy that refused to fill two women’s prescriptions for birth control, Gov. Blagojevich filed an emergency rule requiring pharmacies to fill prescriptions for contraceptives with "No delays. No hassles. No lectures."
Keenan said the lawsuit filed by the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), founded by renown arch-conservative, the Rev. Pat Robertson, exposes the coordinated effort by far-right groups to interfere in women's health care decisions.
"More than 1,100 of our activists in Illinois have sent their notes of praise to Gov. Blagojevich. We join these activists and stand with the governor in support of mainstream values, against Pat Robertson and his extremist lawyers who want to block access to birth control," Keenan said. "Pharmacies have an ethical and legal duty to dispense. Like the vast majority of Illinois residents, Gov. Blagojevich understands that personal responsibility and timely access to birth control prevents unintended pregnancies. Pat Robertson has overreached once again. The women of Illinois do not need him interfering in the decisions they make with their doctors."
Governor Blagojevich’s emergency rule is effective for 150 days. The governor has indicated that he will seek a permanent rule to replace the emergency rule when it expires.
