NARAL Pro-Choice America Responds to Cheney's Vocal Support for 'Nuclear Option'

Vice President's comments align him with far-right groups that want to cut funding for the courts

(Washington, DC) – Nancy Keenan, the president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, blasted Vice President Dick Cheney’s endorsement of the "nuclear option" for judicial nominees – a change in two-century old Senate rules that would make it easier for the U.S. Senate to confirm anti-choice judicial nominees on a narrow, party-line vote instead of gaining bipartisan consensus.

Although Cheney’s support for the "nuclear option" has not been a secret, his speech today before the Republican National Lawyers' legal policy conference in Washington, DC signaled that the White House continues to embrace the far-right organizations in their push to radically restructure the court system.

Keenan cited a story in today’s Los Angeles Times in which the leaders of two leading far-right organizations suggested cutting funding for the courts if judges issued rulings that didn’t follow their extreme conservative ideology. The meeting, caught on audio tape, included Focus on the Family Leader James Dobson, who made headlines by charging that cartoon character Sponge Bob is gay.

"The farcical 'change the rules if you don't like the outcome' strategy caught on tape and reported in the LA Times sounded like it might have come straight out of the Bush Administration. Dick Cheney has made it clear that he and President Bush stand foursquare with Tom DeLay, James Dobson and other extremists who want to impose their personal ideology on every aspect of American life, from personal family decisions to cartoon characters. They want the nuclear option so they can turn the federal courts into another arm of their right-wing power structure," Keenan said.

NARAL Pro-Choice America has activated a nationwide grassroots network to oppose the "nuclear option," delivering more than 120,000 petitions from activists in all 50 states.
