Senate Agreement Puts Focus on White House: Consult, Don't Confront

Statement by Nancy Keenan, President of NARAL Pro-Choice America

“With last night’s agreement, 14 senators stated clearly that the judicial confirmation process should reflect the spirit of bipartisanship and moderation. And they pointed out the most important step toward achieving that goal: presidential consultation. George W. Bush can do more than anyone else to make the confirmation process a source of consensus rather than conflict by returning to the simple practice followed by every other modern-era president: bipartisan consultation. Meaningful consultation will lead to selecting more judges who respect personal freedom and understand how the law affects ordinary Americans.

The Senate took a step toward taking ideological partisanship out of the judicial selection process. Only George Bush can complete the job. As we look ahead at likely Supreme Court vacancies, it’s time for the President to pledge that he will choose the path of consultation, not confrontation, and ensure that Americans’ personal freedoms will be preserved."
