Washington, DC – Following Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s announcement that she will retire from the Supreme Court, pro-choice Americans have responded overwhelmingly in support of NARAL Pro-Choice America and its message that President Bush must work with senators from both sides of the aisle to select a consensus nominee who will earn the support of a majority of the Senate, as well as the American public.
NARAL Pro-Choice America surpassed its fundraised goals in the hours following Justice O’Connor’s announcement. Pro-choice Americans from all over the country have made financial contributions, because they understand the importance of a mainstream nominee who recognizes the impact his or her decisions will have on the average American.
"Phones began to ring at the first announcement of a retirement, and they show no signs of slowing," said Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. "Mainstream Americans are deeply concerned that President Bush will choose to further divide this nation by nominating a radical right wing conservative, who will roll back any number of our hard-won personal freedoms, including our right to choose."
In addition, NARAL Pro-Choice America’s 30,000 Rapid Responders have been mobilized. Among their actions, they are working to organize their friends and family, urging them to contact their senators, disseminating information. Rapid Responders will continue to work and organize in their communities through the announcement of a nominee.
