Roberts Continues to Sidestep Direct Questions on Privacy and Choice
(Washington, DC) – Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, issued the following statement in response to Senator Dianne Feinstein's questioning of John Roberts, President Bush's nominee for Chief Justice of the United States.
"Throughout Senator Feinstein's questioning, John Roberts continued to sidestep repeated, direct, fair questions about whether he believes the constitutional right to privacy includes the right to choose. Roberts' insistence on telling the public about what the Supreme Court has held, rather than his own judicial philosophy, should be a matter of great concern to senators and the public.
"Any American who has undergone a job interview must be watching today's hearings in astonishment. Senators have a duty and obligation to learn about John Roberts' views on critical constitutional issues. Yet, he continues to dodge even basic questions on whether he supports protecting a woman's right to choose. The far right is working to assure mainstream Americans that Roberts is a moderate, but today, he has done little to alleviate concerns that he cannot be trusted to uphold our fundamental rights, such as privacy and women's reproductive freedom."
