NARAL Pro-Choice America Pays Tribute to Lawrence Lader
Activist, author helped found nation's leading abortion rights organization
Washington, DC – Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, issued the following statement in memory of Lawrence Lader, a leading advocate for women's reproductive freedom and founder of the organization that is now NARAL Pro-Choice America, the nation's leading advocate for personal privacy and a woman's right to choose.
"Our thoughts are with Lawrence Lader's family and friends as we pay tribute to his service to women's equality and freedom. His work was cited by the Supreme Court in the landmark decision of Roe v. Wade that guaranteed a woman's right to choose. But Mr. Lader not only put into words why the right to choose is a fundamental American value, he took action to defend this principle. In today's environment in which politicians continue to express hostility to the core values of freedom and privacy, Mr. Lader's legacy is a testament to why America must never forget the pre-Roe v. Wade days of illegal abortion, when women's health and lives were threatened."
