In the late 1930's my mother became pregnant. The fetus died, and became infected. Because of the chilling effect of the total ban on legal abortion at the time, she could not get a D&C to save her life. If someone—a rogue doctor? nurse?—hadn't performed an ad hoc D&C in her hospital room, and had sulfa not been newly available, she would have died, and neither my brother nor I would be here. Don't let the atmosphere that reigned then come back.
