When Louisiana tried to ban abortion in 1991, I distinctly remember my Catholic, Southern Louisiana grandmother saying that it was a woman's body and the government should not interfere. I don't think that it actually hit home until later in life how significant a statement this was considering her religion and her upbringing. But, this was the first time I remember having an opinion about abortion, and I'll never forget it. My grandmother has been a huge influence in my life, and I guess that this early memory started me on my own path to establishing my own pro-choice beliefs.
