I was newly married in 1972 and my husband had many years of college and graduate school remaining. We were both 21 years old and did not feel ready to cope with a child, both emotionally and financially. But I was pregnant, and we were living in Texas. Abortions were not legal there. My husband could not abandon his studies and part-time job so I drove to New Mexico where abortions were legal, and faced this procedure alone. It was the worst day of my life. Young women must appreciate how far we have come on this issue, and we as a society must protect a woman's right to choose. It is so important to us all.
