An aunt of mine died at the very young age of 22. It was during the Depression; she was married and apparently a child was a terrifying thought to her young husband as they had no money or jobs. She died of complications of an abortion.
Our family kept it a secret, and I did not find out until long after I was a feminist and pro-choice. It's incomprehensible to me that anyone else should have the right to tell me to bring an unwanted child into the world. Raising children is a total and lifelong commitment, and only a woman, with the help of those around her, should make such a decision.
