Back in the 1960s I had a very talented, intelligent, math wiz, friend, who had a life of success ahead of her. She needed an abortion. She belonged to a fundamentalist Christian church in which her father was a deacon. Abortion was not legal at that time, so she used a coat hanger to abort herself. She died during the attempt at the age of 23. It was such a terrible loss to her family, her friends, and to society. I can still see her in her casket. She was such a beautiful and sweet natured young woman. She died because women were not valued in our society. This denial of abortions cannot happen again. It is not worth the loss of valuable young women in our society.
