When I was in college, abortion was still illegal. A young woman (at our small liberal arts college) became pregnant and, being a poor student, had no means to obtain an abortion. The student body president took all the student activity funds and gave it to her so she could obtain a safe though still illegal abortion. This caused a terrible commotion with many people at the college censuring the student who gave her the money, and he did step down from his position. But he told me that he was proud of helping the woman and that it was the best thing he had done as student body president.
