My cousin molested me for a decade and even raped me at one point. I had a pregnancy scare. That's why I'm pro-choice.
There's more to it, of course. I lived in a tiny town of 5000, in the Upper Midwest, where the nearest hospital that was capable of even handling childbirth was 45 minutes away. Was there access to abortion? Yeah, right. Keep dreaming. I couldn’t even hide the pregnancy and just adopt the baby out. I was too young to drive so I couldn’t get to the nearest hospital with OBGYN services to have the child delivered safely in the first place.
Pregnancy shouldn’t be a thing of horror. It shouldn’t be something that makes a person feel re-victimized over and over and over again. It should be a wonderful thing, full of joy and wonder.
That’s what supporting the pro-choice movement boils down to me—making sure that pregnancy is the wonderful experience it should be.
