As a Peace Corps volunteer in Africa, I worked with 400 women in 22 groups. During my two years there, I witnessed one young woman die from an attempted abortion because she could not care for a sixth child and nearly a second death of a close friend who attempted an abortion because she feared she would lose her job. Although these are stories from overseas, my work there showed the inextricable link between women's ability to control their fertility and their economic and physical well-being.
