Washington, D.C. — “Again, anti-choice politicians have decided to play politics with the lives of women in the nation’s capital. Rep. Trent Franks has reintroduced a bill to ban abortion after 20 weeks in the District of Columbia and impose his narrow personal ideology on the women there. This attack on women’s freedom and their ability to chart their own futures is unacceptable.
“Indeed, these politicians seem obsessed with attacking women’s health and privacy. They truly believe that women can’t make decisions for themselves and need guidance from Congress. And even though seven in 10 Americans agree that a woman has a right to make decisions about her body, these politicians have gone to great lengths to restrict this right for women in D.C.
“This bill is especially harmful because it fails to account for cases when a pregnancy results from rape or incest, or in the tragic circumstance of a fetal anomaly. A woman whose much-wanted pregnancy has turned into a heartbreaking loss deserves better than to have her life complicated that much more by meddlesome politicians.
“As the political arm of the nation’s pro-choice movement, we will fight this senseless attack and protect the rights of the women in D.C.”
NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
