Calling the action an important victory for sound science, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue welcomed the decision by the Obama administration to drop its opposition to making emergency contraception available to women of all ages.
“I’m pleased to see the administration has come around on the basic facts of this issue. By making emergency contraception available to women of all ages, the FDA is taking an important step to reduce unintended pregnancies and put women in control of their futures,” Hogue said.
The decision by the administration to withdraw its appeal of the ruling by Judge Korman of the Eastern District of New York ends a nearly decade-long battle over lowering barriers to this important medication. Emergency contraception is most effective in the first 72 hours after intercourse to prevent conception.
“Health experts like the American Academy of Pediatrics and many others agree that emergency contraception is safe and effective for women of all ages.” Hogue said. “We’re happy to see this long overdue victory for science over politics.”
NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
