At the 13th Annual Peninsula Power of Choice Luncheon, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue will speak to guests about the challenges and opportunities facing women as abortion access comes under attack around the country. Bioethics and law professor R. Alta Charo will deliver a keynote address on this evolving landscape of obstacles to reproductive freedom and what it means for women and our society.
“I’m excited to be coming to California to discuss abortion access, especially in the wake of Gov. Brown expanding women’s choices by signing the Abortion Access Bill, AB154, into law. California is truly leading the nation in protecting and broadening options for women to control their lives,” Hogue said. “Protecting women’s access to this kind of care keeps the doors open to so many other options for the future: everything from employment and education to starting a family. Now, women in California have more power to control their lives and make these decisions on their terms.”

More about our speakers:
Ilyse G. Hogue has been president of NARAL Pro-Choice America since January 2013. She joined the organization with expertise in both electoral and advocacy campaigns from her time as director of political advocacy and communications at MoveOn.org. Using a mix of paid media, field work, and innovative online efforts, she led the charge to translate the energy of the organization’s millions of members into tangible legislative victories. In 2012, Ilyse helped build and lead Friends of Democracy, a political initiative to reduce the influence of big money in elections.
R. Alta Charo is the Warren P. Knowles Professor of Law and Bioethics at The University of Wisconsin at Madison, where she is on the faculty of both the law school and the medical school. Professor Charo worked on both infertility relief and family planning policies at the congressional Office of Technology Assessment and the US Agency for International Development. She served on the board of the Alan Guttmacher Institute and the board of the Society for the Advancement of Women’s Health. Professor Charo served on President Obama’s transition team, focusing particularly on NIH, FDA, bioethics, stem cell policy, and women’s reproductive health.
NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
