Statement by Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, on today’s Senate vote:
“Ever since the Center for Medical Progress released the first highly-edited video in its recent attempt to ban abortion, anti-choice politicians have been falling over themselves to use the videos as a means to defund Planned Parenthood. But today, they when too far.
“As the clock winds down toward another government shutdown, the Senate leadership’s decision to tie their unpopular anti-choice agenda to the crucial bill that would continue funding the government is not only tone-deaf, but dangerous.
“The fact that these members are willing to waste the dwindling hours of federal government funding placating right-wing extremists with a shallow show vote instead of working to keep the lights on is just par for the course. These extreme anti-choice politicians won’t stop until they ban all abortion, even if that means shutting down the government to get their way.”
NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
