NARAL responds to Medstar Washington Hospital Center

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 3, 2016

In response to the explosive New York Times story about MedStar Washington Hospital Center silencing Dr. Horvath-Cosper for speaking of her role in providing abortion care, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue issued the following statement:

“A hospital should never try to silence a doctor from discussing the vital medical care she provides her patients. To do so is shameful, disturbing, and against federal law. Would they stop cardiovascular surgeons from talking about heart procedures they do? Do they silence oncologists from discussing their work? Then why stop an OB-GYN from talking about abortion as part of the vital medical services they provide? Doing so is a victory for the bullies who are trying to end women’s access to abortion care. Silence breeds stigma and hurts women and doctors, which is antithetical to everything that a hospital should stand for. If MedStar Washington Hospital Center is truly “dedicated to delivering exceptional patient first health care,” they should actually put patients first and stop contributing to the stigma they face if seeking an abortion.

“We support Dr. Horvath-Cosper and all of those who are standing up for women’s health care.”
