NARAL responds to Trump’s comments on landmark Supreme Court ruling

June 30, 2016

Three days after a landmark Supreme Court decision upholding Americans’ right to access abortion, Donald Trump finally broke his silence by objecting to the ruling in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt. While incorrectly stating that if “Scalia was living or Scalia was replaced by me, you wouldn’t have had that” (the ruling was 5-3), Trump doubled down on his pledge to appoint anti-choice justices to our nation’s highest court.

“Donald Trump has finally broken three days of silence to confirm what we already knew: he’s bad at math and, if elected president, would act decisively to curtail the reproductive freedom of all Americans,” said James Owens, states communications director at NARAL Pro-Choice America. “With the next president possibly appointing two or more justices to the Supreme Court, the importance of this election for the future of Americans’ reproductive freedom cannot be overstated. With 7 in 10 Americans supporting safe and legal access to abortion, the pro-choice majority in this country won’t stand for Trump’s radical agenda.”

“Trump’s comments today make it all the more deplorable that Senate Republicans are holding a Supreme Court seat open for him to fill,” added Owens. “Trump’s out-of-touch and mathematically challenged statement is only made worse by the legions of Senate Republicans who support his backward agenda. This November, voters will have the chance to hold both of them accountable.”

Everyone should be able to decide if, when, how, and with whom they start or grow a family.
