NARAL joins Pramila Jayapal to unveil her women’s agenda, rally pro-choice voters

July 21, 2016

Pro-choice voters from across Washington rallied today in support of Pramila Jayapal’s campaign for Congress. At the event organized by NARAL Pro-Choice America and its Washington affiliate ahead of the August 2nd Democratic primary, the group delivered their public endorsement of Jayapal’s campaign and thanked her for being a champion for reproductive freedom and access to abortion. Jayapal used the event to respond to the outrageously anti-woman platform adopted at the Republican National Convention and to unveil her plan to stand up for Washington’s women and families. Leaders from NARAL also outlined their strategy to use political organizing and targeted investments in this race to help make history by electing the first Indian American woman to ever serve in the U.S. Congress.

“At a time when the GOP is constantly attacking women’s access to basic health care, we need leaders like Pramila Jayapal to be a leading voice in the fight for reproductive freedom” said Joel Foster, NARAL National Political Director. “As State Senator, Pramila Jayapal has proven to not only be an ally, but a true champion for women’s reproductive rights. Even before she was elected to office, Pramila was an extremely effective advocate and activist winning real victories for Washington’s families. Jayapal unwaveringly stands up against GOP attempts to undermine the progress made for women in our country— and we know that she will continue that and more as our next U.S. Congresswoman.”

“In this crossroads election year, with so much at stake for women in our nation, Pramila stands out as a leader on women’s reproductive rights and economic security. We need leaders in Congress that will not only vote the right way when the time comes, but make women a top priority, and Pramila is that pro-choice, pro-woman champion,” said Rachel Berkson, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Washington.

Pramila Jayapal is a steadfast champion for women and families and has spent her career fighting against GOP attacks on our reproductive freedom. As a state senator, she’s led efforts to provide low-income women with accessible, long-acting contraception, sponsored legislation to ensure pregnant women receive reasonable accommodations in the workplace, and fought tirelessly against a proposed abortion ban.
