NARAL congratulates pro-choice champion Patrick Murphy for his primary victory in Florida

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 30, 2016

NARAL Pro-Choice America today congratulated Rep. Patrick Murphy for his victory in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate. NARAL endorsed Rep. Patrick Murphy for his leadership in the fight for reproductive freedom and for being the champion Florida women and families deserve in Congress.

“We are thrilled to celebrate pro-choice champion Patrick Murphy on his victory in the Florida primary,” said Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “Patrick has always trusted his constituents to make their own decisions about how and when to grow their families, unlike Senator Rubio, who seeks to impose his will and personal ideology on Floridians. Patrick has always fought hard for our constitutionally protected right to access abortion care, while Senator Rubio continues to campaign on eliminating abortion access, even for women facing the Zika virus. Patrick is committed to making contraception affordable and easily accessible for Florida women, while Senator Rubio has fought common sense measures to reduce unintended pregnancies. The choice is clear in the Florida Senate race: if you believe that empowering women to make our own decisions helps women and families succeed, Patrick Murphy is your candidate, which is why NARAL members will fight every day between now and November 8th to make sure he replaces Marco Rubio in the United States Senate.”

Rep. Patrick Murphy now faces anti-choice incumbent Sen. Marco Rubio in the general election. Sen. Rubio has a long record of pushing policies that hurt Florida women and families and earlier this month insisted that women infected with Zika should be denied their constitutional right to access abortion. Rubio recently voted for a plan to restrict family planning services at a time when women across the country are encountering obstacles to accessing reproductive health care. Previously, Rubio has stated he does not believe survivors of rape and incest should have access to abortion care.
