CA SEN: NARAL congratulates Kamala Harris on her election to the U.S. Senate

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 8, 2016

Following Kamala Harris’s victory in her campaign to represent California in the U.S. Senate, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue and NARAL Pro-Choice California State Director Amy Everitt issued the following statements:

“We are so proud that Kamala Harris will be California’s newest U.S. Senator,” said Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “As California’s Attorney General, she dedicated herself to empowering women and families and clearly understands that this means fighting to protect and expand reproductive freedom. She solidified her status as a champion for reproductive rights when she stood up for truth and freedom by prosecuting David Daleiden, an anti-choice extremist who will use any means necessary to ban abortion in the United States. We are confident that Kamala Harris will take her grit and dedication to Washington and work tirelessly to keep abortion safe and legal across the country.”

“Kamala’s win tonight is a victory for California women and families,” said Amy Everitt, state director for NARAL Pro-Choice California. “We’ve known she was an exceptional leader for women’s rights going back to her days as San Francisco District Attorney, and she hasn’t let us down. Her record shows that she will stand up for reproductive freedom and fight for women’s equality and economic security. California women are lucky to have an extraordinary advocate fighting for them, and we’re excited to see what she can do as our next senator.”

Kamala Harris has dedicated herself to protecting and expanding access to abortion throughout her career, leading NARAL Pro-Choice California to honor her with Champion of Choice Award. As Attorney General, she worked to uphold standards of care for abortion services when hospitals undergo mergers and joined NARAL Pro-Choice California as a sponsor of the Reproductive FACT Act, the nation’s first statewide bill combatting manipulative tactics used by anti-choice “crisis pregnancy centers.” Her victory makes her the second African American woman, and the first South Asian American, to serve in the U.S. Senate.

NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
