NARAL Statement on Women’s Strike
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 8, 2017
Thousands of women across the nation are striking today to recognize “A Day Without a Woman” and calling for policies that protect and expand women’s freedom and equality. In recognition of the women’s strike, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement:
“Today, ‘A Day Without a Woman,’ sends a clear message to President Trump and his allies in Congress as they work to roll back the clock on women’s equality and freedom: a world without us simply doesn’t function. We need leaders who will keep our progress on women’s equality and freedom moving forward, not politicians who are dead set on holding us back. We need leaders who understand that for society to function, women need policies that give us the power and freedom to determine our own destinies. We need leaders who understand that when women have that freedom, our families thrive, our communities thrive, and our economy thrives.
“NARAL’s 1.2 million member-activists are proud to stand together on the picket line in support of today’s strike because we refuse to let a world without women—a world enshrined in the misogynistic and dangerous worldview of leaders like President Trump—become a reality.”
NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
