Today, Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) introduced a bill that would safeguard the critical birth control coverage benefit in our nation’s healthcare law. The bill reflects the proactive resistance happening across the country against the Trump administration’s attacks on women’s reproductive health, including birth control. NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement in support of the legislation:
“Kudos to Sen. Murray for taking a stand today to protect Americans’ access to birth control. The energy around her bill, and similar bills across the country introduced at the state level, sends a strong message to Trump and anti-choice legislators across the country that no matter how much they attack us, we won’t give up. Instead, we’ll rise up in defense of the policies that allow us to take control of our own bodies and lives.
“Champions like Sen. Murray are taking the energy from our marches and translating it into a defense of women and families in the halls of our government. We applaud her bill and will fight alongside her for more progress in the future. ”
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires insurance companies to cover birth control without any additional out-of-pocket costs, including co-pays and deductibles. This policy has saved women an estimated $1.4 billion a year, according to a Health Affairs study.
NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
