NARAL Calls on Senate to Reject Unqualified Shady Blogger John Bush in Thursday Vote

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 17, 2017

NARAL Pro-Choice America National Communications Director Kaylie Hanson Long released the following statement in response to announcements that Majority Leader Mitch McConnell filed cloture on a vote for Trump nominee John Bush, a Kentucky lawyer and shady blogger who has been tapped to fill a vacancy on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit:

“Since they don’t have the votes needed to pass their disaster of a healthcare plan, Senate Republicans are spending the week undermining our court system while they think we’re not looking. While their healthcare bill withers on the vine, Senator McConnell is hoping the Senate will confirm a shady anonymous Kentucky blogger who lacks the temperament and judgement required to serve a lifetime judicial appointment. John Bush’s extensive anonymous blogging has made it clear that he was handpicked by the Trump administration to carry out the administration’s anti-choice, anti-LGBTQ, anti-progressive worldview from the bench.

“NARAL’s million-plus members won’t sit by and let President Trump bend our nation’s courts to his will. That’s why we’re calling on Senate Republicans to do the right thing, break with this reckless administration, and vote down this clearly unqualified and unfit nominee.”

NARAL took out ads calling on Senate Judiciary Republicans to reject this clearly unqualified nominee, including an ad that called out Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) as “spineless.” NARAL has been organizing its million-plus members to make calls and push their senators to vote against Bush, who said in his blog he thinks abortion and slavery are “[t]he two greatest tragedies in our country” and applauded Mike Huckabee for saying that he “strongly disagree[s] with the idea of same-sex marriage.”

NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
