In response to today’s news that Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) introduced a bill to ban abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, following the bill’s passage in the House, NARAL President Ilyse Hogue issued the following statement:
“Our nation is grappling with multiple emergencies, including the worst mass shooting in modern American history and a humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico. Yet, instead of confronting those, the anti-choice GOP has chosen to attack the reproductive rights and health of a small number of women and families who seek abortion after 20 weeks. These skewed priorities are shameful.
“Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump tried and failed numerous times to rip healthcare away from millions of Americans and undermine reproductive freedom for women, so it’s no surprise that–desperate for a win–they are now playing politics with women’s lives by introducing this horrific bill. The bill’s 45 co-sponsors should be ashamed of themselves.
“Abortion after 20 weeks is incredibly rare, and women and families facing these incredibly complex situations don’t need one-size-fits-all judgements from politicians. This bill is not about policy — it’s about shamelessly trying to advance an extreme, anti-choice ideology to please a voracious and radical base of supporters.”
NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
