Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, issued the following statement in response to Sen. Murray’s introduction of the Protect Access to Birth Control Act:
“With his latest attack on reproductive rights, it couldn’t be more obvious that Donald Trump is using restrictions on birth control to enforce his extreme, anti-choice ideology and roll back the rights of women. We applaud Sen. Murray, Reps. DeGette and Slaughter, and the over 185 pro-choice Democrats who signed onto the bill for making a unified effort to protect reproductive freedom at a time when the Trump administration and the anti-choice GOP are obsessed with attacking our basic human rights. By fighting back against the Trump administration’s effort to gut the birth control coverage benefit, which improved access for over 60 million women, Sen. Murray and the pro-choice caucus guarantee that countless women will have more control over their own lives and futures, regardless of who signs their paychecks.
“Economic security isn’t possible without the freedom to decide whether, when, and with whom to start a family. That freedom is harder to achieve without affordable birth control. When women can get ahead and plan for better futures because they can access birth control, our country is stronger, too. Every Republican who claims to care about women’s health and economic security should stand with women and support this bill.”
NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
