Statement from NARAL, Daily Kos, MoveOn, Every Voice, Democracy for America, Progressive Change Campaign Committee to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer:
“This morning, the chairman of Donald Trump’s campaign for President was indicted on multiple charges – including conspiracy against the United States – in the ongoing investigation into Russia’s effort to interfere in our elections. It was also revealed that a former campaign adviser has already pled guilty to lying about communications with Russian agents during the campaign, and is cooperating with prosecutors. With this legal storm now forming directly over the White House and high-ranking Trump associates, the United States Senate should immediately halt all action on all lifetime appointments to the federal bench until the investigation is complete.
“The idea that Trump, whose top aides are under federal indictment by the Justice Department for conspiring against our nation, should be able to appoint lifetime judges, who will have huge influence over this nation for generations to come, is beyond outrageous and defies common sense. It’s clear that Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation will only accelerate, and until we know the full extent of the Trump campaign’s anti-American conspiracy, these lifetime appointments must wait.
“Enough is enough: It is far past time that the Senate stop being complicit as Trump and his associates do tremendous damage to our nation and, according to Special Counsel, break the law. Offering stern words isn’t enough—senators have the ability and duty to refuse to advance Trump’s agenda for our courts.”
