NARAL Members Went All-In For Pro-Choice Champion Fairfax, Turned Out Pro-Choice Voters Across the State
In a victory for reproductive freedom across the state, NARAL-backed candidate Justin Fairfax was declared the winner in the race to be the next lieutenant governor of Virginia. NARAL members went all-in for Fairfax early in this critical campaign, and worked hard to turn out the vote to support his candidacy and that of the entire Democratic slate. NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue and NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia’s Tarina Keene release the following statement of congratulations:
“Justin Fairfax’s victory is a huge win for Virginia women and families who deserve a lieutenant governor who will represent their values,” said Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “Justin proudly ran on standing up for our basic rights and expanding access to basic reproductive healthcare, including abortion and birth control His opponent focused on rolling back our rights and playing Trump-style politics with our access to basic healthcare. Virginia voters have spoken loud and clear: Politicians who target women’s basic care have no place in Virginia.”
“Justin Fairfax has been and continues to be an essential champion for reproductive freedom, and we are so excited to welcome him as Virginia’s next lieutenant governor,” said Tarina Keene, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia. “With Trump and Washington Republicans attacking women’s reproductive healthcare at every opportunity, we’re thrilled Justin will have the gavel in the State Senate and the opportunity to be a pro-choice leader in his new role. Seven in 10 Virginians support access to abortion, and the outcome of this election proves that we won’t sit idly by on the sidelines and let our rights be chipped away by extreme, anti-choice politicians. NARAL members congratulate Lt. Governor-elect Fairfax on his important victory and look forward to working with him to advance reproductive freedom in our state.”
In key districts and throughout the Commonwealth, NARAL members knocked on thousands of doors to turn out pro-choice voters, including more than 14,000 this last weekend alone. NARAL members also made thousands of phone calls as they worked to turn out the seven in 10 voters who support keeping abortion legal and accessible.
