NARAL Statement on Trump’s Announcement on Alex Azar to Lead HHS

(Washington, D.C.) — In response to Donald Trump’s announcement that he will nominate Alex Azar to serve as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement:

“Given Trump’s abysmal track record on healthcare, the bar for confirming any Trump nominee to oversee a federal health agency should be set extremely high. Alex Azar raises particular concerns given his explicitly anti-choice record, which includes being an outspoken opponent of the ACA and giving money to many anti-choice politicians.

“This past year has proven that Trump will stop at nothing to gut the Affordable Care Act, rob millions of Americans of their healthcare, and undermine women’s healthcare and reproductive freedom. Azar’s nomination only furthers this dangerous agenda and Americans deserve better.”
