Following reports that Donald Trump will issue a new policy implementing a license to discriminate against women and LGBTQ individuals, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue issued the following statement:
“It’s clear that this policy and new office are all about implementing a license to discriminate against women and LGBTQ individuals while chipping away at their ability to access safe, reliable healthcare. It flies in the face of medical ethics for a provider to turn a patient in need away. But more than that, turning away a patient in need could put a person’s health or life in real danger.”
“This announcement marks the Trump administration’s latest step toward turning the Department of Health and Human Services into a place where backwards ideology rules, and science, ethics, and concern for the well-being of all Americans are non-existent. Freedom of religion is core to our country’s values, and our laws have long protected the freedom of religion and belief. But religious freedom does not allow people to force their views onto others, especially patients in need of care, as this policy allows.”
“All people should be treated equally—that’s a fundamental American value. As a country, we believe the government should not discriminate, but this administration clearly disagrees. It’s more important than ever to stand up and fight back.”
