After the Senate Judiciary Committee voted to advance the nomination of Howard Nielson, one of Donald Trump’s anti-choice judicial nominees, NARAL Pro-Choice America National Communications Director Kaylie Hanson Long issued the following statement:
“In order to be qualified for a lifetime position on the federal courts, a nominee should be fair-minded and dedicated to defending our basic human rights, yet Nielson’s extreme conservative record makes it clear that he is not. Nielson’s staunch anti-choice and anti-LGBTQ record indicates that he will be nothing more than a rubber stamp for Donald Trump’s backwards ideology. Trump and the Senate GOP continue to reject the public’s desire for an unbiased judiciary, and are stacking the courts with dangerous, out-of-touch ideologues such as Nielson who will advance their brutal agenda for decades to come. The full Senate must now do the right thing to preserve the judiciary’s purpose as an impartial branch, and reject this nominee.”
Nielson has a documented anti-choice record, and filed an amicus brief on behalf of many anti-choice senators and members of Congress in an attempt to impose burdensome restrictions on abortion providers in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt. To learn more about his anti-choice record, visit NARAL’s judicial nominees webpage.
NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
