Mayer Earns Endorsement from Nation’s Leading Pro-Choice Advocacy Group

NARAL Pro-Choice America today announced its endorsement of Shelley Mayer in her campaign for New York State Senate. The election for State Senate District 37 will be held April 24, and is considered pivotal to determining control of the New York State Senate.
“Electing pro-choice candidates like Shelley Mayer is vital for advancing policies that help women and families,” said Ilyse Hogue, President of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “We are proud to endorse Shelley Mayer. We know she will be a champion for reproductive freedom in Albany.”
“I’m proud that my record of fighting for women’s reproductive health rights has earned me the support of NARAL,” said Mayer. “This special election for the State Senate is crucial for the future of New York women, especially in the era of Trump. For too long Trump’s allies in the Senate Republican Majority have blocked efforts to protect Roe v. Wade in New York and pass the Reproductive Health Act, as well as legislation to ensure access to contraception. We must not allow New York to go backwards and I will continue to be a strong advocate for reproductive health rights in the State Senate.”
Shelley Mayer has spent her life’s work fighting for policies that protect and promote sexual and reproductive health and justice. Under NY Attorney General Bob Abrams, she prosecuted extreme anti-choice activists who sought to harass and intimidate women and doctors. She worked to protect women, doctors, and clinics from violence and restrained illegal tactics of Operation Rescue.
She currently serves as the Assemblymember from the 90th District in Westchester. In the Assembly she has advocated for and vocally spoken out in support of access to, and information about, comprehensive sexual and reproductive healthcare. She is a co-sponsor of the Comprehensive Contraception Coverage Act and the Reproductive Health Act. Both of these measures have repeatedly passed the Assembly only to die in the Republican controlled State Senate, making her race crucial to protecting reproductive freedom for New York women.
