NARAL Congratulates Newman for Giving Lipinski the Race of His Life, Will Continue to Call Out His Backwards Agenda in Congress

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement in response to the election results in Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District:

“The fight for our American ideals isn’t won or lost overnight. We’re proud to have been one of the first national groups to endorse Marie Newman in November and incredibly grateful for the tremendous race she ran. This was Dan Lipinski’s hardest race yet, and the fact that he won by such a narrow margin shows that progressives won’t lie down any more as our freedoms and fundamental values are threatened. The first real challenge to Lipinski in decades took nearly 50% of the vote and came within less than 2,000 votes of winning, sending a clear message that the people want someone who truly represents them and their values. Our theory held true throughout the race: when you stand by women and our core values, you can tap into great political strength. 

“This campaign garnered national attention for a reason: it was about more than just one seat, or one candidate. It was the instantiation of an ongoing national dialogue about who will fight for our values in the age of Trump. NARAL and our allies have been on the front lines of progress, and these values, for decades. Our members will continue fighting for equality of all women, men, and people in America by advancing reproductive freedom.” 

NARAL Pro-Choice America endorsed Marie Newman in November 2017 and ran its first TV ad in the race a few days later. NARAL also launched a Super PAC in February with progressive allies to support Newman which spent more than $1.6 million on the race.
