NARAL Pro-Choice America today announced its endorsement of Liz Watson in her bid to represent Indiana’s 9th Congressional District.
“Anyone interested in supporting Indiana families must understand that you cannot expand economic opportunity without supporting their right to choose if, how, and when to have a family. Liz Watson knows that better than anyone,” said Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “Liz understands that these are the bread and butter issues that affect a woman’s ability to continue her education, rise up in her career, and plan for her and her family’s future. She has spent her career working to protect and expand reproductive freedom and we are so proud to endorse her.”
“It is an honor to be endorsed by NARAL. I have spent my career fighting on behalf of women and families, and I will be a strong ally in defending women’s reproductive freedom,” said Watson. “I will work to ensure that all women have access to family planning and the full range of women’s health care services. I have also been a leader in the fight for paid family and medical leave and to end pregnancy discrimination. I am proud to stand with NARAL in these efforts.”
Watson has been an outspoken supporter of reproductive freedom as an essential element of an economic justice agenda, and as a member of Congress she would be unequivocal in her support for the organization and for women’s health. As a staffer on Capitol Hill and as a women’s rights attorney at the National Women’s Law Center, Watson made a career out of fighting for women and families, with a particular focus on reproductive justice. Throughout her career, Watson fought for a Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, and represented pregnant women against Walmart. She helped to convince the company to honor doctors’ notes and lift other temporary work restrictions for pregnant workers. Watson also wrote a law to accommodate breastfeeding mothers in the workplace. Understanding that economic justice issues are reproductive justice issues, during her time as a congressional staffer she led the development of the Working Families Agenda to the U.S. Congress, which included proposals on paid family and medical leave, paid sick days, and predictable schedules, allowing women to take time off from work to keep doctors’ appointments.
NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
