After the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing on anti-choice judicial nominees David Porter, Andrew Brasher, and Holly Brady—one day after Mitch McConnell announced he was cancelling the August recess so the Senate could ram through more of Donald Trump’s dangerous, biased nominees—NARAL Pro-Choice America National Communications Director Kaylie Hanson Long issued the following statement:

“Instead of focusing on the very real challenges our country faces, the Trump administration and the anti-choice GOP in Congress have made it their personal mission to stack the courts against women and families. That’s evident today, following hearings on Porter, Brasher, and Brady, three nominees who are anything but unbiased and impartial. As long as the anti-choice GOP and Donald Trump continue to nominate dangerous individuals, NARAL members will continue to sound the alarm on the crisis in our courts.”

David Porter is a strong opponent of the Affordable Care Act, opposed the Violence Against Women Act, and endorsed anti-choice Attorney General John Ashcroft. He has also been heavily involved in many far-right, anti-choice groups, including co-founding the Pennsylvania Judicial Network and serving as a contributor to the Center for Vision and Values.

Andrew Brasher is currently defending an offensive and absurd Alabama law that limits young women’s access to abortion by allowing a judge to appoint an attorney for a fetus. He also defended other egregious Alabama laws, including its unconstitutional TRAP law.

Holly Brady irresponsibly used her position as an attorney to promote falsehoods about the Affordable Care Act. Additionally, after Indiana faced massive backlash for enacting a discriminatory law that would permit discrimination on the grounds of so-called “religious freedom,” Brady called the response to the law “a lot of hoopla,” minimizing very real fears of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or personal reproductive-health decisions.

NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”

Everyone should be able to decide if, when, how, and with whom they start or grow a family.
