NARAL Calls Hubbell “The Champion We Need in the Governor’s Mansion”
DES MOINES – In a press conference this morning, NARAL Pro-Choice America announced its endorsement of Fred Hubbell in his campaign for Governor of Iowa. NARAL President Ilyse Hogue joined Hubbell on stage and praised his history of public service and fighting for women’s reproductive health care. NARAL has been a leading voice on condemning current Gov. Kim Reynolds for recently signing the most extreme abortion ban in the country, a move much in line with her history of pushing an extreme ideology when it comes to a woman’s right to choose.
“Not only has Fred Hubbell historically taken a public stand as a passionate advocate for expanding reproductive freedom, he has made it the pinnacle of his life’s work in public service,” said NARAL Pro-Choice America President, Ilyse Hogue. “Right now, we have to constantly question who we can count on to stand strong in their values and fight for our rights. But we know exactly what kind of leadership Fred will bring to the job and that’s why he is the champion we need in the Iowa Governor’s Mansion. We could not be more proud to endorse Fred and we plan to vigorously mobilize our members across the state to ensure that our pro-choice champions up and down the ballot win this November.”
“I am honored to have the endorsement and support of NARAL Pro-Choice America,” said Fred Hubbell. “Women deserve equal access to quality, affordable health care, and as governor, I am committed to making that a reality. As Governor Reynolds and the Republican legislature continue to reduce access to quality health care for all Iowans but especially women- privatizing Medicaid, defunding Planned Parenthood, and pushing the most extreme anti-women’s health care law in the country- Iowa is being taken backwards. I look forward to working with NARAL to take Iowa forward, and ensure every Iowan gets the quality health care they deserve.”
Fred Hubbell has a long history of public service in Iowa. He previously served as the Chairman of the Iowa Power Fund, the interim director of the Iowa Department of Economic Development, and notably as the Chair of Planned Parenthood of Mid-Iowa. In a recent campaign ad, Hubbell highlighted the vital services Planned Parenthood provides for women and families in his community and across the state of Iowa. Restoring funding for Planned Parenthood has been a major focus of the Hubbell campaign, and he will continue to be an advocate for quality affordable health care for all. Hubbell is facing incumbent Republican Kim Reynolds, who recently signed into law the most restrictive abortion ban in the country and has proven her intention to work with the GOP to undercut Roe v. Wade.
NARAL’s political program for the 2018 general election is the organization’s largest ever midterm political program to advance candidates fighting for “our values, our future, our vote.” NARAL is investing in diverse candidates up and down the ballot in 19 states, mobilizing members and voters through mail, phones, digital ads, door to door canvassing, TV ads, and rallies that hold anti-choice candidates accountable and lift up pro-choice champions.
