In a bold move to protect Roe v. Wade and prevent abortion from becoming criminalized, NARAL Pro-Choice America today announced a new commitment to be signed by House Members and candidates who agree to protect access to abortion across the country if Brett Kavanaugh is confirmed to sit on the Supreme Court for his lifetime. Members and candidates will be asked to commit to support legislation that would make abortion legal and accessible in all 50 states in the instance that the Senate confirms Brett Kavanaugh or any Supreme Court Justice who will end Roe, criminalize abortion, or abolish the Affordable Care Act.

You can see the commitment here:

“7 in 10 Americans believe women should have access to abortion care and be trusted to make our own decision about our own families. Yet, Donald Trump has committed to replacing Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court with a Justice who will end the landmark decision in Roe v Wade, criminalize abortion and punish women. If the Supreme Court overturns Roe v Wade, or guts the protections the decision grants, abortion could be illegal or unavailable, nationwide, as it is in so many states already. The ACA is also at stake with a Trump appointed Justice. More than 20 million Americans could lose access to healthcare, in particular people of color and low income families. If Donald Trump is successful in getting his nominee through, only Congress, through passing legislation, will be able to ensure women’s fundamental freedom to make our own personal decisions and to access to reproductive healthcare.”

Commitment: “If the Senate confirms this or any Supreme Court Justice who will end Roe v Wade, criminalize abortion, and abolish the ACA, I commit to support legislation that will make abortion available in all 50 states.”

Polling shows that overturning Roe is widely unpopular across the nation, with 7 in 10 Americans who believe in keeping abortion legal and accessible from red states to blue states and purple states in between.

NARAL Pro-Choice America Political Director, Nicole Brener-Schmitz issued the following statement on the commitment

“Donald Trump’s commitment to appointing a Supreme Court with a Justice who will end the landmark decision in Roe v Wade and gut healthcare for more than 20 million Americans, in particular people of color and low income families, is no empty threat. The President has promised to criminalize abortion and punish women — and we take him at his word. For that reason, we need every Senator to reject Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination. But, at the same time, too much is a stake for women and families not to have more assurances from Washington. That’s why we’re launching this commitment. Because if Kavanaugh is approved, abortion very well could become illegal in many states. Members of Congress will be the last line of defense to pass legislation and ensure women’s fundamental freedom to make our own personal decisions and to access to reproductive healthcare.”

NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”

Everyone should be able to decide if, when, how, and with whom they start or grow a family.
