NARAL Calls Polis a “champion for reproductive freedom”

DENVER – At a press conference this morning, NARAL Pro-Choice America and NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado announced their endorsement of Congressman Jared Polis in his campaign for Governor of Colorado. NARAL President Ilyse Hogue and NARAL Colorado Executive Director Karen Middleton joined Polis on stage and praised his history of public service and fighting for women’s reproductive health care.
“Jared Polis is a champion for reproductive freedom and we couldn’t be more happy to endorse him, said NARAL Pro-Choice America President, Ilyse Hogue. “We know Jared Polis is someone who undoubtedly trusts women and families to make the best decisions for them and their families. Jared has a strong, progressive proven record of action when it comes to standing up for women’s rights. We are proud to support him and we are going to bat to ensure that come November, he becomes the next Governor of Colorado.”
“With the threat to Roe now very real, with Trump’s nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, we must affirm and protect our pro-choice Colorado values now more than ever,” said Karen Middleton, NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado Executive Director. “Congressman Polis has been a champion in Congress, fighting anti-abortion personhood bills and most recently speaking out against the Trump Domestic Gag Rule, which will severely limit access to abortion and other reproductive health services. With Trump’s nomination of Brett Kavanaugh bringing us to the brink of a direct challenge to Roe, a pro-choice Colorado Governor becomes even more critical to reproductive freedom. We are proud to support Jared and look forward to helping to get him elected.”
Throughout his time in Congress, Jared Polis has consistently received a 100% rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America. Polis voted against a cruel and unnecessary plan that would ban abortion for women later in pregnancy and fought numerous efforts to defund Planned Parenthood. Polis currently serves as co-chair of the LGBT Equality Caucus which he helped to found and fought to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and pass marriage-equality legislation. Before he was elected to Congress in 2008, Jared Polis served as the chairman of the Colorado Board of Education and founded several non-profit public schools for at-risk children, serving as the superintendent of the New America School, which helps new immigrants graduate high school. If elected, he would be the first openly gay governor in the United States.
