NARAL Statement on Senate Passing FY’19 FSGG Spending Bill with Harmful Anti-Choice Rider

In light of the Senate’s passage of the FY’19 Financial Services and General Government (FSGG) spending bill, which includes a harmful policy rider blocking low-income women from getting abortion coverage through the District of Columbia’s locally-raised funds, NARAL Deputy Policy Director Leslie McGorman issued the following statement:

“Not only is this policy dangerous for women but it makes a mockery of the democratic process in the nation’s capital by usurping the District’s own local governance.

“Congress should respect the rights of D.C. citizens to determine how their local tax dollars are spent, rather than restricting access to abortion care for District residents.  This is yet another example of the hypocrisy of ‘pro-life’ politicians”

This is the first time in over a decade that the Senate bill includes this harmful rider.
