A recent poll conducted by GBA Strategies on behalf of NARAL Pro-Choice America found that suburban women in battleground districts support abortion rights, disagree with their anti-choice Republican Member of Congress on the issue and will vote to protect this constitutional right.
Key highlights from the poll include:
84% of suburban women believe abortion should either be legal and available or say they don’t believe the government should be involved. Even the majority of Republicans (78%) fall into one of these two categories.
93% of Democrats and 71% of Republicans believe it’s important for them to know how the next Supreme Court Justice feels about abortion.
About eight in ten Democratic women said abortion will be important to their 2018 vote, compared to over half of Republicans.
The poll also showed that confidence in Republican Members of Congress is low, with Democrats showing a 40 point advantage on the issue of which party stands up for women’s equality. Democrats also had an advantage on having “strong moral values.”
In response to the findings, NARAL Political Director Nicole Brener-Schmitz said:
“Suburban women are a widely-discussed, prized voting bloc that both parties fight for. But reproductive freedom is not a partisan battle, as the majority of both Democrats and Republicans overwhelmingly support abortion rights and do not want to see Roe v. Wade overturned. Support for a woman’s ability to choose when, how and with whom she has a family transcends party lines.”
“There is an outdated misperception that abortion is a niche issue among suburban voters, but this poll shows that candidates in suburban targeted districts should absolutely campaign on reproductive freedom. What is clear is that vulnerable Republicans are not aligned with their constituents on this issue.”
The poll was conducted online between June 29-July 10, 2018 with 924 interviews in the following battleground congressional districts: AZ-02, CA-10, CA-25, CA-39, CA-49, CO-06, FL-06, FL-16, FL-18, IA-03, IL-06, IL-13, MI-08, MI-11, MN-02, MN-03, MO-02, NJ-03, NJ-11, NV-03, OH-12, PA-17, TX-07, TX-32, VA-02, VA-10, WA-05, WA-08, WI-01.
