Statement of Ilyse Hogue, President of NARAL Pro-Choice America, following the Friday night news dump that Republicans will continue to hide from the public more than 100,000 critical documents from Brett Kavanaugh’s past political work:
“The Trump Administration announced late on Friday night that they will permanently keep more than 100,000 vital documents about Brett Kavanaugh’s past from the Senators charged with evaluating his fitness for the Supreme Court and the American people who will bear the impact should he be confirmed. The invocation of Executive Power–a tool usually reserved only for direct threats to national security–to keep Americans in the dark is a flagrant abuse of power, an obscene break with past precedent and just the last example of the extremes Republicans are going to in order to control this Court.
“Democratic Senators have literally been prevented from upholding their highest responsibility to their constituents and to the country and therefore have no excuse left for continuing to not publicly and loudly oppose both this nominee and this process.
“The Republican game plan is clear. They want to stack the Supreme Court in order to gut Roe v Wade and criminalize abortion, dismantle the Affordable Care Act, rolling back LGBTQ rights, decimating the Voting Rights Act and Affirmative Action and cement into place the worst of Trump’s policies for generations to come.
“History will judge all elected senators not just on a final roll-call vote, but by whether they stood up and fought to protect our rights and rule of law at the most critical juncture of the modern era.”
