In response to Christine Blasey Ford speaking out about the allegations of sexual assault against Brett Kavanaugh, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue issued the following statement:
“We believe Christine Blasey Ford, and she must be treated with the respect and dignity that all survivors deserve but too often do not receive. We absolutely must learn lessons from history. The media, the Senate, and the American public must respect this woman and the process of resolving her claims. Christine Blasey Ford should never have had to come forward, and she is incredibly brave to do so and to relive her horrific story of assault at the hands of Brett Kavanaugh. Her story is yet another proof point that Brett Kavanaugh is unfit to serve on the Supreme Court and his nomination should be withdrawn immediately. He is entitled to defend himself in an associated investigation but that should not happen while he is still in contention for a lifetime appointment to the highest Court in the land.
“These sexual assault charges come on top of charges of perjury and indications of extreme views that make the majority of Americans oppose his confirmation. He has shown throughout his professional tenure and these hearings a lack of respect for women and our bodily autonomy. The stakes are too high to allow this nomination to move forward.”
NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
