NARAL Pro-Choice America today announced its endorsement of Andrew Gillum for Governor of Florida.
“Andrew Gillum has shown himself to be an advocate for the rights of women and a champion that the people of Florida deserve,” said Ilyse Hogue, President of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “As governor, Andrew Gillum will fight for women’s rights and we know we can count on him to protect access to reproductive healthcare for Florida families. We are excited to endorse Andrew and will work hard to help him win in November.”
“It’s an honor to have the support of NARAL, an organization leading the way in fighting for women’s health,” said Gillum. “I’m proud to stand with Florida’s women, and I trust them — not politicians — to make their own health care decisions. As Governor, I promise to stand in the gap for women and stop the Republicans from using women’s health care and reproductive rights as a political football. When women succeed, Florida succeeds and now, more than ever, we must stand together in protecting women’s rights.”
Andrew Gillum understands the importance of supporting a woman’s constitutional right to choose safe, legal abortion established in Roe v. Wade. He previously served on the Tallahassee City Commission from 2003 to 2014 as the city’s youngest commissioner. Gillum has proposed creating a law protecting women’s access to free contraceptive care. Gillum is running against Republican U.S. Representative Ron DeSantis, who has a proven anti-choice record.
NARAL’s political program for the 2018 general election is the organization’s largest ever midterm political program to advance candidates fighting for “our values, our future, our vote.” NARAL is investing in diverse candidates up and down the ballot in 19 states, mobilizing members and voters through mail, phones, digital ads, door to door canvassing, TV ads, and rallies that hold anti-choice candidates accountable and lift up pro-choice champions.
