A NARAL Suburban Women Polling Memo conducted by Public Policy Polling on behalf of NARAL Pro-Choice America found that a majority suburban women in key Congressional districts support abortion access, and are more likely to vote for candidates that will protect reproductive freedom.Key highlights from the poll include:
- 78% of suburban women, a majority across all political parties, in key Congressional districts believe politicians should not prevent a woman from having an abortion if she chooses.
- 52% of suburban women are more likely to vote for a candidate for Congress who supports reproductive freedom, including access to abortion; including 72% of Democrats and 54% of Independents.
In response to the findings, NARAL Political Director Nicole Brener-Schmitz said:
“Suburban women are one of the most coveted voting blocs for both political parties this November, and this poll proves that reproductive freedom will be a deciding issue for them. Yet the Republican party is far out-of-step with women and families in this country, especially the majority of suburban women who overwhelmingly oppose turning back the clock on reproductive freedom and will vote accordingly on November 6th.
“With real threats to Roe on the horizon, NARAL members are fired up and ready to elect pro-choice champions across the country who support access to abortion—and this poll shows that a majority of suburban women are with us. Suburban women are mobilized and energized to vote out representatives who believe politicians should be making the most personal decisions for women and their families. The message is clear: if candidates stand by women and fight for our rights to make the best decisions for ourselves and our families, we will stand by them come November.”
The poll comes after NARAL announced its largest political program ever, including a $5 million investment to keep momentum going through midterms and hold the Republican Party accountable. The campaign makes significant investments to target suburban women, a critical voting bloc, and help them understand what’s at stake with the very real possibility that abortion could soon be criminalized. The poll was conducted via telephone and included 1,066 interviews between October 17-October 18, 2018.
