Following last night’s victory, NARAL Pro-Choice America congratulates Kyrsten Sinema. NARAL endorsed Sinema, and is proud to see her headed to the Senate to fight for women and families.
“At a time when Donald Trump and the anti-choice GOP continue to try and roll back the freedoms that are so fundamental to this country, Kyrsten Sinema is a beacon of hope and her victory is a sign of change to come,” said NARAL President Ilyse Hogue. “Last night’s win shows that when candidates stand up for Arizona women and our essential rights—including the right to access abortion—they win. Seven in 10 Americans support access to abortion, and Kyrsten will fight for them.”
“NARAL members were proud to play a big role in this race, pouring their energy into this fight and mobilizing behind Kyrsten’s commitment to our shared values. We are proud to have helped push Kyrsten Sinema across the finish line, and look forward to working together to put a check on the anti-choice GOP’s agenda by working to defend and expand reproductive freedom for all.”
Sinema previously served in both chambers of the AZ State Legislature and in 2012, she announced her bid for U.S. Congress and became the first openly bisexual person to serve. She is the first openly bisexual person elected to the U.S. Senate and the second openly LGBT person ever to serve in the Senate, after Tammy Baldwin. During her public service in Arizona, Sinema passed legislation to increase penalties on sex traffickers and empower law enforcement to crack down on predators. She also worked tirelessly to expand critically important AMBER Alert system, and led a bipartisan effort to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act. In the Senate, Sinema will vote for continued funding of women’s health clinics like Planned Parenthood and will fight to protect the ACA.
NARAL members made over 1.1 million calls to voters in phone banks all across the country, knocked on nearly 350,000 doors, sent almost 2 million pieces of mail, made more than 343,000 text messages, and held postcard parties, debate watch parties, and rallies in dozens of states. NARAL members vote at a rate of 90 percent, so much of NARAL’s $5 million election program focused on not only mobilizing our members but expanding the number of pro-choice voters. NARAL’s “Pro-Choice Majority Makers” program included TV and digital advertising, direct mail, and a campaign to educate and engage suburban women voters across the country to help them understand what’s at stake if abortion is criminalized by anti-choice politicians. NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
