Challenger in Texas’ 21st Congressional District Earns Endorsement from Nation’s Leading Pro-Choice Advocacy Group to Unseat Anti-Choice Republican Rep. Chip Roy

NARAL Pro-Choice America today announced its endorsement of former Texas State Senator Wendy Davis in her campaign to represent Texas’ 21st Congressional District and unseat anti-choice Republican Representative Chip Roy. In 2013 Davis carried out an historic fillibuster against Texas’ abortion ban and is a longtime fighter for reproductive freedom.
“Donald Trump and anti-choice politicians are waging an all-out assault on reproductive freedom in my home state of Texas and across the country. That’s why we need proven leaders like Wendy who won’t back down from this fight,” said Ilyse Hogue, President of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “While Chip Roy wants nothing more than to insert himself into women’s personal decisions, Wendy has proven that she will always have Texas women and families’ backs. That is the kind of leadership Texans need and NARAL is proud to support Wendy and send a champion for reproductive freedom to Congress.”
“Texas has become the testing ground for the nation’s most dangerous anti-abortion laws. Much of the extremism we are experiencing under the Trump administration at a federal level, we have already experienced in Texas,” said Aimee Arrambide, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Texas. “When anti-abortion extremists dismantled the state’s family planning program, Wendy Davis was there fighting back along the way. When extremists in Texas were trying to pass a sham law that would have closed the majority of abortion clinics in the state, Wendy courageously filibustered for hours to make sure Texans’ voices were heard. We need a fighter in Congress who knows what’s at stake and we look forward to having Wendy’s leadership in Congress.”

Wendy Davis is a former Texas State Senator and longtime advocate for reproductive rights, making national headlines in 2013 for her 13-hour fillibuster against a Texas abortion ban. In 2014 she was also the Democratic nominee for governor in Texas. Her opponent, Chip Roy, is an extreme anti-choice politician who worked for Republican Senator Ted Cruz.
